Over the past several years, the sport of Logrolling has gone from a smaller niche sport
at the La Crosse YMCA to a thriving epicenter that includes classes five days a week,
most of which are filled to capacity.
A decade ago, less than 10 Coulee Region kids competed at The Lumberjack World
Championships in Hayward, WI. This past summer, the number of amateur rollers was 21. Overall, more than 200 kids in the La Crosse area participated in at least one Logrolling
session this past year.
Coulee Region Logrolling, the organization that oversees and promotes the sport in the
La Crosse, WI area, is set to receive a major kickstart. With the rapid growth of
Logrolling in the area, the La Crosse YMCA is now officially joining forces with Coulee
Region Logrolling – and on October 28 will unveil a new era, one that will formally, and
financially connect the YMCA with Coulee Region Logrolling.
It’s a relationship that’s expected to provide a strong quality of life asset to the La
Crosse area – and perhaps have a big impact of the growth of the sport of Logrolling
both in the Coulee region and beyond. The La Crosse Y aims to raise $300,000 in total, with a goal of $5000 for Coulee Region Logrolling to cover functions and programming during this year's “Y day of Giving”, which takes place for 36 hours between Monday, October 28, and the Tuesday October 29th.
The funds raised at the event will assist Logrolling events at the YMCA – plus
tournaments, classes, and promotional events, such as the La Crosse Open tournament
at Pettibone Park, as well as Logrolling events in both the Onalaska and Holmen
communities.
The fiscal partnership will also include the YMCA's assistance with additional funding for
insurance, sponsorship collaboration, log maintenance, and marketing for all local pro
and amateur tournaments in the La Crosse area.
Beginning October 28th, a new era will officially be underway, one which should enhance
Logrolling throughout the coulee Region, and almost certainly have a positive ripple
effect for the sport of Logrolling overall.
Coulee Region Logrolling, now in conjunction with the YMCA, will be hosting the River Rat Roll on Saturday, October 25th and the Jingle Bell Roll on Saturday, December 20th at the Dahl Family Y. A silent auction will be held on the pool deck during the Jingle Bell Roll as a fundraiser for Coulee Region Logrolling.
